Former NCT Member Taeyong Faces Appeal Trial on Sexual Assault Charges

On September 17, the Seoul High Court will open the appeal trial for Taeyong, former member of NCT, who has been indicted under the Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes (special law on aggravated punishment).

Case Background

In June 2024, Taeyong and two acquaintances were accused of sexually assaulting an intoxicated woman. Prosecutors indicted all three earlier this year, charging them with aggravated sexual assault.

In August, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced Taeyong to 3 years and 6 months in prison. Additional penalties included:

40 hours of a sexual violence treatment program

Five-year employment restriction in institutions related to minors and youth

Legal supervision during and after his sentence

Following the verdict, Taeyong was taken into custody in court.

Taeyong’s Statement

Before sentencing, Taeyong delivered a final plea:

> “I deeply regret the pain I caused the victim. I also apologize to everyone who felt disappointed because of me. If given leniency, I will treat it as my last chance and devote myself to activities that contribute to society.”

On August 25, he submitted a handwritten letter of remorse. The two other defendants did not provide such statements.

Appeal Process

Prosecutors appealed the ruling, seeking a seven-year prison term instead of the original sentence. Taeyong and the other defendants also filed appeals, hoping for reduced penalties. The appellate court will now determine whether sentences should be adjusted.

Controversy Around Activities

Public backlash intensified when it became known that Taeyong continued NCT 127 activities despite being under indictment. He even hosted an SNS live broadcast days after the alleged assault and appeared at the group’s 8th-anniversary fan meeting in August.

According to reports, his agency claimed they only learned of the charges in mid-August. Soon after, Taeyong halted all promotions and eventually departed from the group.

Career Overview

Taeyong debuted in 2016 with NCT U and later gained global fame as a member of NCT 127, recognized for his rap, dance, and stage presence.

Closing Thoughts

Taeyong’s case has shocked fans and the wider K-pop community. What was once a celebrated career is now overshadowed by grave legal troubles. The upcoming appeal will not only determine his sentence but also stand as a test of accountability in an industry where fame often collides with responsibility.
